Nauru Customs has advanced its digital modernization efforts with targeted enhancements to the ASYCUDAWorld system and focused technical training.

In a recent technical support and training mission facilitated by UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), practical solutions were delivered to address system bugs, expand reporting capabilities, and enhance user proficiency to set the stage for broader digital integration across government systems.

In addition, the mission delivered a comprehensive one-week hands-on training session for customs officers.

According to the Acting Director Nauru Customs Mr. Titus Aubiat, the mission was helpful and “delivered effectively, ensuring a clear understanding of the topics by Customs officers”.

Mr. Aubiat said, “As part of our efforts to streamline operations, we developed a simplified declaration process and trained our officers on its usage and application to improve efficiency and smoothen the implementation of declaration procedures.”

The mission, led by UN Trade and Development’s ASYCUDA expert Mr. Mohammed Rizwan Khan, focused on aligning ASYCUDAWorld configurations with the operational needs of Nauru Customs.

This included cleaning up duplicate data records, reviewing and updating taxation rules, and proposing new workflows for managing key commodities such as phosphate and fuel.

A major milestone was the engagement with the Treasury Department to explore integration between ASYCUDA and the national Financial Management Information System (FMIS). This integration is expected to streamline financial reconciliation and improve government-wide oversight once Treasury transitions to a planned cloud-based FMIS next year.

Nauru Customs is becoming better equipped to continue its digital journey.

The mission was supported by the PACER Plus Project.
